Movie: Public Enemies * Trailer * 6 Clips * Images * Official Site
In Theaters: July 1, 2009

Runtime: 140 minutes
Directed by: Michael Mann

MPAA Rating: R for gangster violence and some language
Gecko Rating:

I wondered if "Public Enemies" would romanticize the gangster life, and it sort of does. But it also gives the other side of the story the blood, violence, and nastiness.
Still, this movie mostly romanticizes it, mainly because Johnny Depp is just so darn cute. What girl could resist his charms, gangster or not? Plus, I think he’s actually getting better looking as he gets older. But enough of my crush
In "Public Enemies," Depp plays notorious gangster John Dillinger in the 1930s. It’s not a life story or anything; the movie actually picks up with him getting out of prison after something like nine years. Apparently, he’s learned nothing in there, because he’s right back at it, gathering the gang back together and planning their next bank robbery.
We really don’t see a lot of the other gangsters it’s mostly about Dillinger but on the sidelines is Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum) and others. In a nightclub, Depp spots the beautiful Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard) and goes over to introduce himself. He wastes no time and not only strikes up a romance right away, but also tells her who he is and what he does. "I’m John Dillinger, and I rob banks." She resists his charms at first, but they’re soon involved in a torrid affair.

I don’t know enough about Dillinger to know if everything in the movie is factual, but it sure plays well on screen. The romance, the bank robberies, the hiding out, the cat-and-mouse games with G-Man Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) it’s all good. But what I really love about the movie is the fantastic cinematography. If it doesn’t win some awards, then something is seriously wrong with the world.
The camera work vacillates between traditional shots like you’d see in any commercial movie and old news footage-type shots. I don’t know the technical terms, but it’s very clear and concise, and almost bathed in a sepia toned sheath. I kept thinking about the footage of Lee Harvey Oswald being gunned down as he was being transferred from one place to another, because it reminded me of that. Other scenes looked like they were shot with a hand-held home movie camera. It gives you the feeling of being right there at that time and place.
The original music by Elliot Goldenthal — a guitarsy-cross between folk and jazz is also really impressive. I could have just listened to the music all day. And all of the vintage stuff the cars, guns, clothing, and interior designs was all spot-on.
"Public Enemies" didn’t have enough bank robberies to impress my teenaged son, but if you’re a fan of Johnny Depp or gangster movies, or if you just want to see a really well-made film, then go check this one out.
NOTE TO PARENTS: The R rating is mainly for violence; there are quite a few scenes of people being gunned down, heads getting banged, people bleeding to death, that sort of thing. There’s a little bit of sex, but nothing explicit. You just see Dillinger and Frechette in bed together. I’d say it’s ok for kids 16 and older who don’t mind violence.

The first official and best sounding tribute to Michael Jackson is West Coast rapper The Game. On the track is The Game, PDiddy, Chris Brown and Boyz II Men. Check it out! Also , check out the interview the The Game did with CNN on the motivation of the song and where the proceeds of the money will be going from the song.CNN: You may be the first well-known artist to have a Michael Jackson tribute out there. The Game: I didn't want to wake up the next morning and have somebody spread a tribute all over the Internet, and I wasn't a part of it. So I decided to take matters into my own hands.CNN: Did you already have the beats pre-recorded?The Game: No. The first thing I did was call DJ Khalil ... and I told him, "Yo, I need you in the studio, and by the time I get there, I need a Michael Jackson tribute song made [the music bed]. I need violinists, I need pianists, I need everyone in there for a production."And then I started reaching out to Diddy. He's on a set 18 hours a day, but he said he'd get it done some way, somehow. Talked to Chris Brown. He and [his manager] Tina Davis said they were on their way to the studio -- so they told me after I do my part, to bring it over and Chris will do the hook. Before I took the beat over to Chris, Boyz II Men walked into the studio randomly -- so they took it to their studio next door, laid down all the background vocals. Then I took it to Mario [Winans], then I took it to Diddy. In the meantime, me and my boy Taydoe -- we running around to the hospital, to the Jacksons' house, to the star on Hollywood, getting all this [secondary] footage [for the video]. Crazy.CNN: This was the day he died, on Thursday? The Game: It was just the day. By Friday, everything was done -- video, everything. We did it in 15 hours. CNN: You made the music video for $500.The Game: All in tapes, $500 went to tapes, HD high-definition tapes.CNN: At the end of the video, you reveal a new tattoo. The Game: Yeah, I'll show you. I thought if I was going to get a Michael Jackson tattoo, I would get a more menacing one. (The tattoo shows the "King of Pop" with a bandanna over the lower half of his face.)CNN: Had you ever met Michael? The Game: I never met him in person, but he tried to mediate a truce between myself and Curtis Jackson [aka 50 Cent], and I wasn't having it at that time.CNN: How did that happen? Did somebody call you and say, "Please hold the line for Michael Jackson?"The Game: At first my managers called me and they said, "Mike -- Michael Jackson -- is going to want to talk to you in an hour. Exactly an hour." So I waited an hour, and I'm like chewing on my fingers in the hotel room ... and the phone rings and a guy comes on and he's got an English accent. He's like (affects an English accent), "Hello Game, I have Michael Jackson on hold for you." It was just cool.So Michael comes on, and ... he was like, "Yo, it's Mike, and I'm a big fan of your music," and starts going into my songs, "Hate it or Love It" and "How We Do." And he's like, "I'm a big fan of 50's -- every time I get in the car, I tell my driver to play 'In Da Club.' Would you guys be willing to make a truce, and then put it on my album?"Read the rest here

Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.
Per sources, Palin's return to her home state has been a rocky one. Beyond a flood of ethics complaints most of which have been dismissed the governor was forced to backtrack on her decision to reject federal stimulus funds, her pick for attorney general was rejected by an increasingly hostile legislature, and her personal life has continued to grab headlines.

There has to be something else behind this. This announcement on this day did not just happen by chance. Watch the video!

Lauren Conrad and her boyfriend Kyle Howard were hanging out at Deluxe Thursday night when Lauren whined that Ryan Gosling hit on her.

Umm…Lauren, hate to break it to ya, but you’re flattering yourself. Lauren told Kyle, “Who does he think he is? I’m with you. I would never.”
He said, “I know baby, if I was there I would have set him straight.”
Instead of that, a friend said, “Let’s go find Ryan Gosling. Let’s beat him up.”
They should just have a dance off, that’ll settle it.

Hopefully the holiday weekend is already in fully swing for most of you. For those of you still stuck in front of a screen, or just taking some time to relax and catch up on your internet browsing, we’ve put together a collection of videos to keep you entertained, laughing, or just thinking WTF? Happy Friday everyone, and enjoy.
American Psycho Romantic Comedy Trailer
Have you ever watched a movie trailer and then watched the actual movie later only to think, “the trailer made the movie seem like it would be totally different?” Well this little demonstration in film editing perfectly illustrates just how much the crafting of movie trailers can effect viewers perceptions of what a film’s actually about. Props to the editor for their efforts in sculpting clips of this schizoid Phil Colin’s fueled slasher into something Matthew Mcconaughey might star in.

The Dan Band: Total Eclipse of the Heart
Anyone who has seen Old School might remember the hilarious wedding band singing their own take of “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. Though many might have assumed the expletive splicing group was a fabrication concocted with clever writing just for the film, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The Dan Band actually takes their role of artful cover singing quite seriously, and appears to put on one hell of a concert. Check out this video of their live performance and you’ll see what we mean.

District 9: Trailer
Not to get too stuck on trailers, but with all the blockbusters swamping the summer movie lineup, the trailer for this secretive project produced by Peter Jackson has caught our eye. Without giving too much away, we will say that it’s documentary style adds an interesting twist to the genre. Check it out to see what we’re talking about, and look to watch it in theaters August 14th.

Beer Pong: On the Next Level
Depending on your age and social crowd, over the holiday weekend you a round or two of beer pong might be in store. Before you start believing you’re at the top of your game though, we recommend checking out professional skater boarder Bill Mark’s take on the sport.
Practice clearly makes perfect.

Awesometown Pilot (Not appropriate for work)
If you’re a fan of the humor found in Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone’s, music video spoofs like on a boat, then you’ll probably appreciate this TV pilot for “Awesometown” that was cut by fox. Though it’s a little on the long side, several of the skits have potential and definitely made us wonder why it was nixed.

Tony Jaa vs Lateef Crowder
Every guy can appreciate great fight choreography. This scene from Tony Jaa’s “The Protector” is amazing and does a good job of highlighting stylistic differences between Brazilian Capoeira (break dance fighting) and Muay Thai. Of course the fiery temple back drop and water slow-mo shots help pile on the ridiculousness.

If each passing year results in an expanding arsenal of electronics then you should read this. Now, if you’re like Gear Patrol’s Ben Bowers and inflicted with something I call “gadgetphile” with only the world’s most wired home theater being enough, then I suspect there are few predesigned media solution that fit your needs, but I stand firmly in between these lines. I’ve got one foot in purposeful design and one foot in something that rhymes super cheerio mothers, and so I forge on a quest to find something that crosses these thresholds.
Traditional home furnishings rarely accommodate all your gear and I’ve seen my fair share, everything from Crate & Barrel, to IKEA. Recently, I came across the Payton Smart Technology Media & Gaming Console from Pottery Barn, and it looks like someone finally got the “media and gaming console” right. No, it won’t work for two-channel purists or home theatre mavens with amplifiers for each and every channel of sound, but it will work for those of you with a combination of receiver, flat screen television, a couple of gaming consoles and a couple of extra peripherals. Oh, and manage to do so with a nice mix of traditional style and modern design.

The Payton Smart Teechnology Media & Gaming Console is made of hardwood and birch veneers finished in something Pottery Barn calls Zen Brown. I’m not sure how much zen happens when you’re watching Iron-Man in Dolby DTS Master HD, or a sweat-riddled round of Call of Duty, but in the interest of home furnishings it looks great.
You’ll be able to accommodate your new flat-panel TV (I like Vizio and Panasonic depending on your price range) up to 50″, but the real oooh factor comes from the console’s ability to store your Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, AppleTV, Logitech Squeezebox, what have you. There’s also, wing-door cabinets for your dvd’s and games, an organizer drawer for your controllers and remotes, and a built-in five outlet smart strip to reduce wire clutter, though I imagine Ben is reading this shaking his head muttering “what you need is aPanamax Power Conditioner.”
Cost: $1299

I’m probably more in love with "Transformers" than "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" (read my review here). They’re both rock-em sock-em movies with giant robots, but the first one had more plot and character development, in my view. Well, as much as you can have in a movie about giant robots.
THE DVD: The 2007 action flick directed by Michael Bay centers on an ancient battle between two extraterrestrial robotic clans, the heroic Autobots and evil Decepticons. But the key to who wins this battle is held by a teenage boy, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). Also stars Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Rachael Taylor, Jon Voight, and John Turturro.
("Transformers" is also now available in a two-disc Blu-ray edition. As with the DVD, it includes new deleted scenes and 25 minutes of bonus features; available on June 16 from from Paramount Home Entertainment.)
THE GIVEAWAY: I have FOUR Transformers" DVDs to give away.
HOW TO ENTER: To enter the contest, simply leave a comment on this post by midnight on Saturday, July 11, 2009. Be sure to include a valid email address. Winners will be drawn randomly. Ill email the winner for their snail-mail address after the contest ends. Good luck!

Benchmade Mini-Barrage and ComboEdge Sharpener Kit

In arecent post, my compadre Dusty touched on how every man needs a knife (or ten). I could not agree more. Try carrying one for a week, and I’d wager you won’t want to stop. Whether you’re looking for a first knife or just another knife in your quest for ten, Benchmade is a fantastic place to start. Originating in Oregon, they make some of the highest quality and well-respected knives in the industry. Their knives come in four different classes red, black, blue, and gold; these classifications run from the everyday knife (red) to the collectors special edition (gold).

The Mini-Barrage 585 is a new model in their Blue line, described as, “A knife for the real knife person.” I’ve had the pleasure using the Mini-Barrage for a while now and it’s relegated my other knives to the dreaded dresser drawer. Equipped with a 2.91″ blade and 4″ handle, it’s more than enough knife for day-to-day tasks, yet it doesn’t make people think you’re pulling a Paul Hogan. Benchmade’s proprietary AXIS locking mechanism keeps the blade securely in place when open and is a nice advancement from traditional lockbacks. The icing on the cake, though, is definitely the spring assisted opening mechanism. With a slight nudge on the thumb stud, the blade springs decisively open… convenient, impressive, and as close tothis as you can legally get. The knife oozes quality, exceeding my expectations and easily surpassing my other knives, all of which are from highly touted companies. With two blade types, plain steel or Teflon-coated, and plain-edge or ComboEdge (half-serrated) offerings the Mini-Barrage is a solid contender for any man’s pocket.

In conjunction with the Mini-Barrage, I also tested Benchmade’s ComboEdge Sharpener. We’ve covered a few knives and plenty of multi-tools here at Gear Patrol, but never a sharpener. The fact is, as I learned as a Cub Scout, a dull knife is a dangerous knife. The ComboEdge Sharpener is intented to put a new edge on either serrated or plain blades. As diamond edge sharpeners go, it does its job exceptionally well and is far easier to use than a honing stone. I tried it on a pocket knife that was my Dad’s growing up that I know hadn’t been sharpened in at least a decade. With just a few passes, it was razor sharp (I literally shaved the hair off the back of my hand)…I think that says it all.
Editor’s Note: For those of you not interested in doing your own sharpening, Benchmade offersLifeSharp where you send your knife back to them, and they’ll put a new factory edge on it as well as give your knife a full clean-up. The service runs just $5.00 for the first knife and $2.50 for any subsequent knives. That’s a heck of a deal.
Cost: Mini-Barrage, $120
