Extreme Fat Smash Diet

Is it possible to lose 10 to 25 pounds quickly? Ian K. Smith, M.D., author of Extreme Fat Smash Diet thinks so. Yes, this is the same guy who wrote The Fat Smash Diet, so Extreme Fat Smash Diet is the follow up to his first book.
How does Extreme Fat Smash Diet work? Extreme Fat Smash consists of three segments; each diet segment lasts seven days. Each segment strictly limits your daily calorie intake and what you can eat.
The first segment of Extreme Fat Smash Diet is very low in calories, which is a red flag. You can only consume about 800 to 900 calories per day.
The second segment of Extreme Fat Smash Diet allows a little more food choices, but your daily calorie intake is still low. You have an option of eating a tablespoon of peanut butter and three tablespoons of cottage cheese a day.
Lets say you have successfully completed the first two segments, but you still have not reached your target weight, what do you do? There is no easy way out. The diet says that you have to continue doing them over and over again until you reach your target weight, which is rather boring and in my opinion counterproductive.
The third segment of Extreme Fat Smash Diet kicks in when you have finally reached your target weight. You are allowed a little more food choices and you have to start exercising; then comes the maintenance phase.
Does Extreme Fat Smash Diet work? Yes, it does workbut so is any other diet that puts you on 800 calories per day. I bet the dropout rate on this diet is very high, because it is not sustainable over time. And where are you going to get the energy for about 1 hour of cardio Smith prescribes?
Should you give Extreme Fat Smash Diet a try? You can probably make this diet work for you. The diet does recommend eating nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits, and meat. In short, the food choices on this diet are healthy and well thought out.
Follow the diet the way it is described in the book, but I would increase the daily calories to at least 1,200 calories a day and I would also incorporate one cheat day, which help prevent what is known as diet fatigue.

As it turns out there is more than one hot granny middle-age woman in Hollywood. Lisa Rinna’s body is not even close to Madonna’s muscles, but she does look exceptionally well for her age.
It has been 10 years since she starred on Melrose Place, but Lisa can still fit into her old clothes from the show! “I’m the same weight, but I’m leaner and more ripped,” says the 112-pound, 57″ Lisa. “It’s ironic, but I am happier with my body now than I was at 20.”
Like many women, Lisa says keeping her slim figure has gotten harder as she gets older. “The second I turned 40, noticed that what I did regularly didn’t work anymore,” she explains. “I gained weight easier and couldn’t eat as much, so I really had to step it up.”
Lisa Rinna’s workout and diet To take things to a new level, Lisa started eating small portions every few hours, avoiding white carbs and filling up on PowerBars, chicken salad, almonds and Starbucks fruit and cheese plates. Her favorite sweet treat is sugar-free Jell-O pudding.
“It’s just 60 calories, which to me is heaven,” she says. A former cheerleader, Lisa was always active but now exercises diligently six times a week and has become a dance fanatic ever since she went on Dancing With the Stars two years ago. “I think I will stick with it as I get older,” says Lisa. “I’m 44 and feel really lucky to have this body!” [source: In Touch]

Protein Shakes for Women

Is there such a thing as protein shakes for women? What makes a typical protein shake particularly suited for women but not for men?
I think protein shakes for women is a marketing gimmick. A high quality protein shake is a high quality protein shake; there is nothing in it that would benefit women more than men.
Some brands will try to convince you that their protein shakes are specifically formulated for women because they contain some added vitamins and minerals that a woman may need.
The thing is, unless your blood test shows that you are deficient in certain vitamins, which is unlikely, why would you want to indiscriminately take a boatload of vitamins?
The bottom line Protein shakes for women use prettier packaging than regular protein powders and many of them claim to be specifically formulated to meet womens needs, but in reality you just need to find a high quality protein shake, which does not contain added sugar and vitamins.

Oh yes, I’m shopping for more workout clothes. It’s not as so much an obsession as a way of building confidence (at least that’s what I tell myself), and wearing great pieces just makes me want to get to the gym and show stuff off. If you’re looking for some slightly eclectic pieces, here are my top sources for amazing workout wear:
1. Cool Hemp/Cotton Sweats: These embroidered trousers are a dream. I’m usually not the white-liking type, but I’m willing to give these a try on account that I’ve been staring at them all week long!
2. Organic Cotton Palazzo Pants: Oooh, I love a good pair of wide-legged pants for relaxing and stretching.
3. Doce Vida Buzios Ballet Top: What an awesome top that combines bright colors and black! I’d layer it underneath my super support bras with wide straps that almost look like another top altogether.
4. Golda’s Sophisticated Top: I love Brazilian workout gear, and these tops actually bring something new to the workout world. Say “bye” to your tees and pick up these gorgeous selections with asymmetrical lines.
5. Nike’s Loose-Fit Women’s Workout Shorts: These amazing shorts are a nice compromise when you are hunting for something that’s a little softer and forgiving, but still hard-wearing for intense sessions.

I have to admit that this is the first I have seen of this subject matter…
Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), which results in a baby having a low weight at birth, has been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes in adulthood. It has been suggested that this is because the expression of key genes is altered during fetal development and that this affects disease susceptibility later in life.
What do you think about this? This particular study showed that the expression of Pdx1, a gene, was found to be reduced in pancreatic beta-cells throughout life following intrauterine growth retardation and therefore increased the risk of type 2 diabetes.
I will have to keep my eye on this material.

Oh boy, it has been a while since I journaled on here. First, the big change. I have now started checking my blood sugars twice a day- in the morning and before bed. My sugars have been so good as of the last few months that I feel confident in my decision. My readings have all been between 80-110, so I feel good about that.
Food wise is another small change. I have re-introduced some whole grain carbs back in that I was not allowing previous. FiberOne cereal, Grape Nuts and some whole wheat pasta. I figured it was worth a try to see what response my body gave, and it loved it! My blood sugars are actually lower 2 hours post a whole grain then after say a yogurt and half an apple. Amazing! And I am a heck of a lot less hungry- I have also started eating a small breakfast everyday. Big difference.
I have lost 2 more pounds- nothing earth shattering but it is small progress. My blood pressure, just for your reference, was 100/58 the last time I checked it last week and my A1c was 4.9. So I will keep on with what I am doing. Next up.. get my thyroid checked.
Exercise…. this is where I have slacked. I am sorry to report this bu as life got really busy mt activity dwindled a bit. I am still running around at lacrosse practice twice a week and walking 2 other times, but I have not used my weights. I will make this my goal o get back on it! Have a great day and how have you been doing?

First of all, today is Mothers’ day. Earlier today I watched the movie StepMom, it was on at HBO and I accidentally saw it while channel surfing. I’ve seen this movie several times when I was younger (during my pre-mom days).
Motherhood changes a woman life is an understatement. You just see everything under a new light, the moment you knew a life is pulsating inside you. Your priorities change. You and your life isn’t just the same anymore.
As is shown in this particular movie - one big dilemma a mother can experience is knowing that you will outlive your young kids and leave them in the care of somebody else. In real life, not everyone is lucky to be given the time - that Susan Sarandon’s character in the movie had - to let another woman get to know your kids well, reconcile your personal issues with yourself and the people close to you, enough for you to be that secured to entrust their future to her.
Many women’s lives have been claimed by cancer at such inopportune time that kids are in their formative years. It just breaks my heart thinking if I wouldn’t be there during the highlights of my kid’s life. We all want to be there. If we can’t, i don’t know…those who survived you, just survives somehow. After all, life such goes on, right? It just sucks. But cancer happens sometimes.
And ohhh…I was sobbing real hard when I saw the movie earlier. This is just a very emotional day ( in a good way!) and it is almost over for me. My 5-year-old already hit the sack more than an hour ago, maybe I should too. ;-)
Happy mothers’ day, to all you mothers!

Top 5 Posts By Readership

The channel is gathering the top five post series in each blog. It’s really up to the blogger where to base the top post from on a certain time period reference.
I have to confess that I never scrutinize the stats of any of my blogs, I just look at the monthly summary. I’m always busy, you know! ;-) Ha ha.
Just now I did, and wanted to give you the most popular posts in the blog. Mostly read, mostly commented I guess. He he.
Anyways…it’s really interesting to know which pages/posts are mostly clicked by the readers. Here goes…
1. Patrick Swayze Cancer Update This reminds me to keep mentioning here, real cancer stories. Not just celebrities but from people whose stories will inspire. With celebrities, readers want to know what’s the update now. Current news on Patrick Swayze says that he is continuing the battle with cancer, although he is already ready for the worst and has readied his will.
I believe that’s just practical, to be ready for the worse. We all hope he survives the battle, but practicalities has to be taken cared of.
2. Top 4 Deadliest Cancers
Readers are looking for basic information. While I often link to the CDC or Mayo Clinic, the National Cancer Information for their fact sheets and everything else there is to know about several cancer types, maybe I should have some basic cancer info kind of post. Doesn’t have to be too long, but a downsized version. I should put this on my to-do lists!
3. Sorafenib: Miracle Cure for Liver Cancer
Readers will always want the recent treatments and whether they are available to them. Either they are just cross-referencing what they already know, or they are doing some research themselves so that they can ask their physicians and oncologists about it. Like I have always preached in blogging, one should be a discerning and informed patient. In this day and age of information technology, the internet is a valuable resource of information.
Though you gotta be smart enough to know which information are trashy. That’s why, always discuss what you found on the web, with a healthcare professional. First thing you have is your doctor. He always know better, instead of asking the blogger where you got that particular info. I know that my job may not stop at directing you to the right people and professionals, I don’t want to make the mistake of giving advice that isn’t in my capacity to give. In blogs where I write, I always say that it is for educational purposes only, to give you some insights on current developments and should not replace the advice of your doctor. But you already know that, right?
4. Dave Matthews Band @ Stand Up For A Cure Concert Series
Finding the cure for cancer takes a lot of money. The good news is that, every citizen (big or small) wants to help in any way. BUT, they want to have fun too while helping. That’s why fun cancer charity events are a seller.
5. New Study Found Blood Test For Early Stage Lung Cancer
That catching cancer in the earliest stage possible, is already known — and the world is i think listening. People want to be on top of the current on cancer diagnostics. The least invasive the test is (of course should be of high accuracy), the more it will be more patient-friendly, I think.
So there! I think I should this kind of post more often. See you again!
————————————-
Wait! Don’t forget to join this blog’s “Take the Test” HPV Awareness Bracelet Contest.

Birth Control Patch Ortho-Evra Linked to Blood Clots Advocacy Group Wants It Banned

All hormonal birth control comes with some risk of side effects, but birth control patch Ortho-Evra, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson (whose Melt Away Stress product line I recently reviewed), is coming under public scrutiny because of its apparent connection to potentially deadly blood clots in users.
A recent Reuters article sheds some light in exactly what the problem is:

In a petition filed with the FDA on Thursday, Public Citizen’s Health Research Group said the amount of estrogen released from the Ortho-Evra patch varies widely among individual women, and those who absorb too much were at greater risk for blood clots and other painful side effects.
"The considerable safety concern of high-dose, variable estrogen exposure tips the balance of risks and benefits against the availability of Ortho-Evra as a contraceptive," wrote Sidney Wolfe, head of the research group.
Ortho-Evra has seen its use slip in the wake of such data, which led to warnings on the patch’s label as recently as January, when a study of women ages 15 to 44 found blood clots known as venous thromboembolisms were about twice as likely in women using the patch versus birth control pills.
The FDA at the time said the patch was safe and effective when used as directed and urged patients to talk to their doctors about the risk.
Estrogen used in contraceptives has long been known to increase the risk of blood clots, which can trigger heart attacks or strokes. Women who use Ortho Evra can be exposed to about 60 percent more estrogen than pill users.
"If Ortho-Evra had been designed as a pill, it is unlikely to have been approved because of its increased estrogen content," Wolfe said.

Did you see that last line? Let me repeat it: "If Ortho-Evra had been designed as a pill, it is unlikely to have been approved because of its increased estrogen content." I have to be honest — that’s alarming.
The major benefit of the patch is that it’s birth control you only have to think about once a week. But if it carries much higher risk (in addition to being visible since you apply it to your skin), is the convenience really worth it? What do you think? Leave a comment.

Many countries celebrate mothers on the second Sunday of May. Happy Mother’s Day to all the (breastfeeding!) mothers in the United States, Canada, Australia, India and elsewhere! In the United Kingdom though, today kicks off a celebration of a different kind, National Breastfeeding Awareness Week:
This National Breastfeeding Awareness Week celebrity mum and Atomic Kitten member Jenny Frost is showing her support for breastfeeding by fronting the Breast Buddy initiative. The initiative will support you to breastfeed for longer by encouraging you to nominate a buddy from within your circle of friends and family, who can provide practical and emotional support while you breastfeed…. The theme of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week this year is ‘Breastfeeding: every day makes a difference to your baby’. If you receive support - whether it be from a friend or family member, a health professional, or volunteer breastfeeding supporter, you are likely to breastfeed for longer, giving your child important health benefits.
As part of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, shops, supermarkets and shopping centres in the U.K. are demonstrating that they are “Breastfeeding Friendly.” For more information on becoming a Breastfeeding Friendly Retailer (or for a list of Breastfeeding Friendly Places, to be compiled soon), click here.

Matt Neustadt, the star of CW’s Farmer Wants a Wife, is a cool guy and he is shirtless. But would you fight over him the same way the girls on the show do? I think many women would and here are the 5 reasons why.
1. He is real. Being someone I am not, just to impress somebody else, is not the best way to start a relationship, says shirtless Matt Neustadt.
2. He is open to ideas when it comes to vacations. I would cater each vacation to the girl I was dating. My decision would be based upon her idea of romance.
3. He would move to the city for love. Farming would be impossible in the city, but for true love, I may just do anything, says Matt Neustadt.
4. His values are in order. Family is more important than I can convey in words. At the end of my life, the only things I will reminisce on will be loved ones and family, says Matt.
5. He puts women to the test. One challenge on the show has to do with cows and a technique used to find out if they are pregnant. Trust me, it is very funny! says Neustadt. [source: OK!]

A new report in the journal, Pediatrics supports a common sense thought children in car seats are safest when strapped to the middle section of the rear seat. In fact, theyre nearly 50% safer than when strapped into either side. The study analyzed car accidents from more than 8 years and found that while the majority of kids 3 and under were strapped into the right-back position, children riding in the middle sustained the fewest injuries.
But what to do if youve got more than one passenger in the back? Positioning a child safety seat in the middle of the effectively cuts the remaining room for other kids, the dog etc. Not to mention the fact that getting your child properly secured in the middle is a bit trickier.
The study did not have answers to those questions. But there are a number of resources you can check including American Academy of Pediatrics Car Safety Seat Guide, and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. And when in doubt, ask your pediatcian for a healthy resource.

BPA From Plastic Water Bottles (and baby bottles!) May Be Hazardous to Your Health

You know that drinking water is healthy, and that drinking bottled water is an easy way to stay hydrated on the go. But what you may not know is that chemicals from plastic bottles may be leeching into your water, and could cause such major health problems as cancers and early-onset puberty.
Environmentalists and the very health conscious have long argued that plastic bottles, or at least the cheap plastic kind, are bad for the environment because of the waste they produce and the resources they require. And increasingly, many have voiced concerns about ingesting chemicals that seep into food and beverages, prompting the popularity of reusable containers like Nalgene bottles and Kleen Kanteens.
Of particular concern is how these chemicals, specifically BPA, can affect children and infants. Says a recent ABC News article:

There’s a possibility that the chemical found in plastic water bottles, baby bottles and the lining of many food, drink and baby formula cans could be linked to health problems, including prostate cancer, breast cancer and early-onset puberty, according to a chemical evaluation released Monday night by the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Toxicology Program.
…The draft brief found some worry that exposure to the chemical bisphenol A, known as BPA, could have neural and behavioral effects on fetuses, infants and children at existing exposure levels.
"The possibility that bisphenol A may alter human development cannot be dismissed," the evaluation noted.
Indeed, the study failed to put to rest long-standing worries about whether the widely used chemical is safe, and ensures that scrutiny of the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to approve BPA will continue. While some have argued the chemical is associated with health risks, the FDA and industry experts have stood by their controversial conclusion that the chemical is not harmful.
The chemical helps make plastic tough and shatter-resistant; the plastic is used in food and drink containers, bike helmets, dental sealants and more.
At the American Chemistry Council, Steve Hentges, executive director of the polycarbonate/BPA global group, said today that there’s still no evidence of serious health risks or need to remove BPA from the market. This evaluation echoes many of the already published findings about BPA, Hentges said.

You can get more details by reading the full article.
How do these findings make you feel about the water you drink and the products you and your kids ingest? Does this make you want to change anything, or do you think this is just an overreaction? Your opinion counts. Spout off in the comments.

Continued from Bikini Bottom Booster.
What it is: Cellulite Water Reduction Therapy is a new hydrotherapy spa treatment for cellulite.
How does the Cellulite Water Reduction Therapy work? Clients at the Medical Spa at Nova in Ashburn, Va., lie in a tub while a pressurized stream of water is run up the legs and buttocks. “It boosts circulation, helping rid the body of excess fluid, which improves the appearance of the skin,” says Ken Brown, certified massage therapist.
Results: “It makes dimples less obvious,” says Brown of the $120 near-hour-long procedure.

New Britney Spears Bikini Body

“It’s Britney, bitch.” Or more like, it’s the new Britney Spears and she is not afraid to show off her bikini body. She is still working on putting the finishing touches on her bod, and I think she is making a pretty good progress.
Multiple sources report that Britney desperately craves to get her slim, toned bikini body back. Reportedly, she has already lost about 20 pounds in four weeks and she is still losing weight. Currently, Britneys weight is estimated to be just below 120 pounds. Here goal is to get down to about 110 pounds.
How did she lose 20 pounds and what is Britneys overall fitness plan? This time, thankfully, there are no reports of any funny business with lipo or the so-called fat burners; she is doing it clean.
Britney Spears’ Diet Changes The most significant improvement in Britneys diet has to do with limiting her fast food intake. Now she eats fast food only once a week on her “cheat” day. She has also cut back on sugar and has increased her intake of lean protein, whole grains and healthy snacks. Britney also is taking a multivitamin.
Britney Spears’ Active Recovery Workout One source reports that Britneys exercise program is called Active Recovery, which involves high-intensity work on each muscle group moving without any rest from one muscle group to another.
Another aspect of Britney’s workout Britney’s personal trainer, Marc Corliss, helps her with interval training which is basically a combination of cardio and strength training as well as lots of stretching. Britneys typical workout lasts about 1 hour and consists of spinning or working on the treadmill and weight training. [sources: OK!, Life & Style, Star]
