Fresh Faces in Food

The restaurant scene in Chicago is constantly evolving, always keeping up with peoples new tastes or trends. Here are a few restaurants that have only been around for a year or so, but they have already made a name for themselves in the dining biz.
Chalkboard, a contemporary American restaurant in North Center, is just that: a restaurant with oversized chalkboards that list the specials of the day. Rather than constantly reprinting menus, the owners are able to easily change these boards on a daily basis. Aside from the namesake wall-length chalkboard, the small dining room features white molding, linen-clad tables, and chandeliers. The menu includes beef stew, crunchy Southern-fried chicken, and tasty pork tenderloin. Theres even a decent wine list with its own chalkboard, of course.
Sura is an upscale establishment without the upscale prices. Between Cupcakes and Intelligentsia, its Thai-inspired cuisine with a French influence is offered in small dishes, enabling diners to try a variety of flavors in one sitting. If the plates appear like little works of art, it may be due to the very modern dcor of the restaurant itself. Feeling a bit like an art museum, Sura is dressed all in white, except for the occasional accent or accessory. While most of the menu consists of tapas like coconut-crusted shrimps or scallops ceviche, there are entrees available, like the teriyaki-glazed tilapia and tamarind cashew chicken.
Finally, the term supper club may sound old-fashioned, but the Cordis Brothers Supper Club is far from old and dusty. Beneath the brass chandeliers and tinted mirrors, families and couples of all ages enjoy the establishments concept: pay one price for a complete meal. Unlike many other restaurants where salads, soups, and side dishes are all listed a la carte and priced separately, here you can find an affordable way to enjoy a great-tasting dinner. I recommend the restaurants signature dishes: baby back ribs or the pork chop parmigiana (butterflied, flattened, sauteed, and buried under marinara sauce and mozzarella).
With great flavors and excellent service, these restaurants are sure to last the long haul.

Ever wonder what potential your roof has for solar power generation ? To answer this question now there is a website ( Roofray ) that is looking to help answer all of those queries using satellite data and a hands-on web site. Basically its a solar clearinghouse that uses Google satellite data and info from the National Renewable Energy Labs to help users make good decisions about what sort of system to buy.
Heres how it works: enter an address, pull up the satellite image of the chosen buildings rooftop and then using the RoofRay tool based on Google maps, draw your solar arrays ( YouTube video attached). Data on square footage of the system, slope of the roof, power per square foot and total peak power all show up in a chart, and the info displayed depends on how big youve drawn your system.

After drawing the panels you can dive into metrics based on the size and location of your solar system, including projected performance, financial analysis, average monthly utility bill after solar is added, total cost summary and, our favorite, time until the system pays for itself. The biggest potential of the site for the user could be the ability to test out how good a homes solar potential is before buying it. - Via

Hop a Bus

Europe by train is an enduring ideal in many peoples minds. But dont overlook another option the bus.
Eurolines is probably the most well-known inter-Europe bus company. They have 500 European destinations, and are especially good if you are looking to travel further east or in countries where the inter-country rail links arent as good. They offer online booking, however it is through the local Eurolines operators and the websites arent always in English. They also have a Eurolines Pass which gives you the option of 15 or 30 day unlimited travel between 40 destinations. You can book as you go (2-day advanced notice,) so its pretty easy to be flexible, and prices start at 199 EUR for the 15-day and 299 EUR for the 30-day for an adult pass in the low season.
Busabout is another option. They are a bit more tour-like and cater to a younger set. They run May-October and have 30 destinations in 10 countries. You can design your own trip or they have loops covering a certain region of Europe.
And dont forget about in-country travel. Often the bus is easier, cheaper and has better options than the train. In the Czech Republic, youll find more direct routes and shorter travel times for most cities if you take the bus. The bus system in Spain is also excellent nice buses and quite inexpensive.
BUG is an excellent resource for overview information about bus lines throughout Europe.

Lightbenches or bench seating that lights up are sure to the great conversational pieces for your home or garden. The bench is illuminated with RGB LED technology which means you get to choose what color you like or even a changing spectrum of different hues and shades - all at your fingertips with the programmable remote control.

The benches are water resistant and rugged so they can be used outside in parks, patios and gardens. They could eliminate the need for additional lighting and provide lovely focal areas amongst the foliage and along footpaths at night. They are easy to clean too for the bench surface has been specially treated. Their low wattage requirements (95 watts) make them environmentally friendly too - you’ve got to like that! These illuminated benches were designed by Lutz Hopbach (Germany) and can be purchased from Frellstedt (Germany).

Bring the outdoors inside with these “stone” cushions. They are not really boulders but soft felt wool cushions. The textile hue and embellishments cleverly mimic the natural color and marbling pattern often seen on real stones and pebbles.

Place two of them to form the back rest and seat of your very own zen chair and meditate away! The cushions are made from 100% merino wool. The designer is South African Ronel Jordaan. She trains her artisans to make them at the women’s workshop in Gauteng- Johannesburg. So not only do you get a great product but will also help the artisans earn their living. The Felt Stone Cushions are available in three sizes which range from $298 - $595. You can purchase them from Vivatera.com.

The stunning polished stainless sink features the HIS system, which replaces the traditional drain pipe usually visible underneath basins. The lack of pipes underneath makes these designs particularly effective when mounted by themselves, as well as highly convenient to be fitted over a vanity unit. In conclusion this sink from Axolute, can produce an intriguing illusion, but what if you want a sink full of water ? - Via

This is my daily collection of noteworthy stuff that I saw online. + We had a big swimming pool when I was a kid so I am totally approve of the advice given by Apartment Therapy Los Angeles in their post May We Borrow Your Pool? One time, a girl that never spoke to me in school rang my door with her swimsuit. The rules apply to any events. Be a good guest and do not extend your stay. + If you are looking for fun birthday party favors, why not filled with candies a mini candy dispenser with scoop or give miniature classic gumball machines by Beau-coup. The double-decker mini candy bins are pretty cool. Via Style Me Pretty + The Industrial Hand is an intriguing black and white tableware collection designed by Heather Mae Erickson. Glossy and matte finishes plays against each other in an asymmetric pattern. The Appetizer Platter with 7 Slant Vessels (not shown) and the Cup, Spoons & Saucers on Tray have unique shapes. Via designboom + The Taka trunk at Crate & Barrel hides removable bottle dividers. That trunk conveys an old-world steamer trunk. It carries a Spanish mood. NOTCOT refers to it as Pirate Bar Coffee Table and I kind of agree. + Supplement the pirate bar decor with the impressive Felted Wool Stones by the talented South African textile designer Ronel Jordaan. They are now available at Viva Terra. I met Ronel two years ago when she came to SIDIM in Montreal. She explained her process to us. Her rock cushions look real and each one is unique since they are handmade. I have seen many lookalikes but Ronal Jordaans rock cushions are second to none.

Are you going off to college and have limited space in what your college calls a dorm room? The Convertible Compact Desk from Crate and Barrel is maybe the perfect solution for those tight spaces. It looks like a 30″ cabinet at first but then transforms into a 55″ full-size desk. Slide its top panel and suddenly you have a table top and a leg. When slid open, cubbies and other storage compartments become exposed and cord cutouts allow for wire maintenance to charge gadgets. The birch veneer and deep ebony stain make this an impressive piece but it doesn’t come cheap at $499 but hey it looks alot better than IKEA pressed wood….

The green Advanced Remote Sonar Sensor (RSS) is super portable and can be placed anywhere and will beam back to your watch with details of where the little fishes can be found.
Rainebrooke Metro Tech Laptop Bag Review

All laptop bags have their perks. This one offers the unique option to personalize your laptop bag via embroidery, or basically however you like, since it is made out of 600D Nylon on the exterior. This makes it a great buy for the college and under demographic who needs to get clever pins and Sharpee laden slogans out of their system. It has remarkable padding, a little under an inch thick, to protect laptops of the young and spontaneous (ie… clumsy). This is a lot like a backpack reincarnated into a laptop bag.

Overall, the design is a little chunky. The thick black line outlining the bag would be better if it were a light color matching the spectrum of pastels that the bags come in. A little embroidery and decorative effort should take care of this just fine though. Space in this bag is great. There are two interior compartments so you could fit a laptop, books and homework! Another zippered exterior compartment is very roomy and has about ten pockets for various uses. The outside of that compartment has yet another large velcro/zipper pocket. Also, shoulder strap is detachable. It fits most 17″ laptops, with plenty of room in the other pockets for more items.
Metro Tech comes in 4 colors- Light pink (pictured above), hot pink, light blue, and bronze. It can be purchased at www.rainebrooke.com for $34.95. Compared with other designer bags, it is not as pretty, but for the price and how sturdy and roomy it is, it’s a decent buy for college/school age kids. This would even make a good back to school gift.
Conclusion:
The Good: Spacious and sturdy design, very affordable, easily decorated with your own embroidery

The Bad: Not very trendy

Lately, all we want to do on the weekends is lie by a pool. Problem is we have no pool of our own. Luckily, we have a generous friend with the most perfect pool -- landscaped with a nice swath of green lawn, multiple and comfortable chaise longues to flop on after swimming, a lush shaded pergola to escape to with a book or the paper, perfectly temperate water and a fridge full of beer -- who enjoys sharing it. But we're still a little shy...
Ask before bringing friends: Don't assume it's a come one, come all situation.
Bring food or beverages: Be generous and go for the good beer, the high-end potato chips, the hard-to-get cupcakes.
Provide your own towels: Bring at least one per person.
Make your visit short: Two hours is about right. Your host can always ask you to stay.
Entertain yourself: Don't expect your host to provide entertainment. He's already providing the pool. Bring a book or just enjoy the quiet time.

Does your home have a pool?
