The Worlds Oldest Basketball Shoes!

Manolo says, from the Manolo’s friends at Boing Boing come news of the discovery of the world’s oldest kicks!

Gary Pifer a vintage clothing dealer found the 116 year old sneakers while combing through picked over items, that were contained within a victorian era trunk. “As I arrived late, I was told that all the good stuff was gone”, said Mr. Pifer.
He paid 50 cents for the brown high top canvas sneakers made by the Colchester Rubber Company. Later that night, Mr. Pifer was shocked to discover, during an internet search, that the brand went out of business in 1893.
“In a instant, I knew this discovery would be re-writing basketball and sneaker history, as these sneakers are 25 years older than the 1917 Converse All-Stars”, added Pifer. The Colchester Rubber Co. was located in Colchester, Connecticut and was in business from 1888 to 1893.

Naturally, this being the Age of Commerce, Mr. Pifer, who discovered the shoes in 2004, has already set up the company to market reproductions of these marvelous shoes.
And, the Manolo has to say, he would happily wear these shoes.

Mmmmmmmm, something tells me this photo was a wee bit staged. But that’s cool - Khloe Kardashian looks killer in her Audrey-gone-sexy trench, wide-brimmed hat, and Louis Vuitton/Stephen Sprouse pink graffiti handbag. I love the modern twist against her classic outfit…a little bit of ’80s pop mixed with ’50s starlet. Nicely done.

We know he’s got his own William Rast line, but it took this photo of Justin Timberlake pulling his Louis Vuitton luggage (love the gray) to tell us that, yep, JT is a fashionisto. Louis Vuitton seems to be the gateway drug for male celebs and their designer man bags - Kanye West has gotten down with the camo, Usher’s been out with the traditional monogram.

The lovely Adriana Castro bestowed an incredible honor on me-- she named the hottest bag from her Spring 2010 line after me! That has got to be the highest honor for a bag snob! Anyone who has met or shopped with me knows my tendency to shout "that is so 'Tina', I must have it!". Apparently Adriana took note the last time I visited her showroom in NYC because she designed a clutch that is not only totally 'Tina', it's named the "Tina" Clutch! I love the pleated and full shape, it holds everything yet is easy to clutch due to the flat clasp. (Jump to see interior). The best part is you can custom the "Tina" (yes, I am going to use the name over and over, I am that vain!) clutch depending on your taste. You can choose any skin (crocodile, lizard, python, ostrich leg) with any trim and in any color! The "Tina" clutch is currently by special order only (Adriana tells me the boutiques have loved them!). To place an order, e-mail sales@adrianacastroonline.com or order by phone 1.866.460.4484.

The dimensions: 9.5"W x 5.5"H x 2"D (you can customize the size, too! make it larger or smaller, depending on your needs-- prices will adjust for size accordingly). Crocodile: $1,1150 -- You will be hard pressed find another crocodile clutch for this price and quality!
Lizard: $1,015 -- I love the ring lizard but think I will go for a crocodile version. Heck, it's named after me, shouldn't I get ALL colors!?!? Python: $895 -- Adriana uses high quality python skin that is supple and lush. Ostrich Leg: $700 -- Hello! This is a no brainer, ostrich leg is as sturdy as they come and the price is crazy!!!

We all know how tots go bananas over bubbles, but it just isn't that fun when the bubbles are made without some effort involved. Bubble machines kind of kill the joy. But then I don't really want to hyperventilate from blowing bubbles for an hour. This Bubble Rocket get tots to make bubbles themselves with the most fun they will ever have. No exaggeration. The rocket sits in a bath of bubble solution and is launched by jumping on an air bladder. The air shoots the rocket into the air and blows, not quite a gazillion, but a lot of bubbles in the air. This is the perfect activity for a long weekend at home when you desperately need something to tire them out. Plus, for the 4th of July, it is patriotic, kind of. Rocket's red glare? OK, I'm grasping but it is tons of fun. Trust me, you'll be caught saying, "Hey, it's my turn!". At Gazillion Bubble Rocket is $32.95.

"Real Oilcloth" and How to Make It

Why do they call it "oil"cloth? Probably because the recently advertised "real oilcloth" that is all the rage is made from cotton fabric covered with a petroleum based coating. However, genuine oilcloth, the real thing grandma had on her kitchen table was made from cotton duck, canvas or linen that was

coated several times with linseed oil to give it a waterproof-ish surface. The fabric could be dyed or printed before the linseed treatment.
Genuine oilcloth is biodegradable in a landfill. The falsely advertised "real oilcloth" made from PVC or polyvinyl chloride does not break down in a landfill.
If you need your custom fabric laminated with a PVC coating, here are a number of companies who will do the job for you.
If you'd like to give the real thing a try, here's what you need:
Heavy cotton duck or canvas
Wooden stretcher frame
Staple Gun
Linseed Oil and paintbrush
Oil paint or oil dyes if you want to create your own design
Now here's how you do it:
1, Stretch fabric onto frame for stability and smoothness
2. Create a design by tie dyeing, stamping or painting with oil dyes or paints
3. With long brush strokes, cover entire piece of fabric on the good side, let dry, repeat
4. Add design between coats of linseed oil and keep coating and letting it dry
5. Once it's good and coated, remove from frame, trim edges and use as desired
If you want to make an entirely water resisitant piece, make the item and dip it completely in linseed oil, let dry and repeat.
Oilcloth Upholstery Tip:
When using real or PVC oilcloth, use thicker staples, staple diagonally to the grain of the fabric and use a heavier grade of fabric. Laminated fabric tends to tear like paper if you staple with the grain and using finer staples.
I've used Custom Laminations on the list of fabric laminators and they have been most satisfactory.

Were suckers for the right packaging we see it and we want it, whether its the cool branding of a an Innocent Smoothie, the cheeky retro boxes of our favourite Benefit buys, a Le Labo fragrance, or a Diptique candle. And let's face it, UK high streets just wouldn't be the same without a Starbucks logo (or three).

Weve got a new brand crush in the form of Green & Spring, a lust worthy new skincare range created by the couple behind super-luxe Cowley Manor and its award winning Spa in the Cotswolds.

The packaging is as cool and clean as Cowley and the lotions and potions inside - made from herbs, flowers and plants native to the British isles - smell like HEAVEN.

Think expensive spas, ultra chic hotel rooms, and luscious herb gardens in summer... Trust us when we say these fragrances are to die for if only you could scratch and sniff your computer screen...

Our bathroom staples? Their Relaxing Hand Cream the perfect concoction of marshmallow, comfrey, lavender and camomile.

And for softer than soft post-sun skin, try the incredibly rich Indulging Body Cream (a serious treat for you or a deserving friend).

Feast your eyes on the fall "must-have" bag. When I first spotted this stunning creation back a couple of months ago, it was plain to see it would be an instant hit. Even before its official release, celebrities like Julia Roberts have already made the Marni Wave Bag their "go-to" bag. The Wave Bag's subtle elegance is contrasted with a mod vibe and luxe accents that only Marni can deliver. There's no question Marni has this niche of the handbag market cornered. As I mentioned before, the Wave Bag will be released in several shapes, sizes and colors with plenty of options to satisfy the most discerning handbag collector. Even if you've never been a Marni handbag fan, this design is classic enough to appeal to you. Just look at the gathered pleating and contrast piping detail on these bags - simply divine. The Marni Wave Bag will be arriving on-line and in stores sometime in July. I'll keep you updated on its official release, but you can browse and shop Marni accessories via Marni's virtual store.
