I Love You, I Love You Not

A few months back, while in Target, I found myself perusing the shampoo aisle when I came across the Umberto Beverly Hills hair line. The whole collection was half off, so I started looking at the different product selections when I spotted the Repair shampoo and conditioner. It promised to cure moisture starved hair that had damage from styling and chemical treatments (check yes to all of the above) so I decided to give it a try.
I fell in love with the scent of both the shampoo and conditioner after my first use. The shampoo was creamy and lathered really well and the conditioner was thick and made my hair feel silky while wet. Once I started blow drying my hair, things started going down hill. I noticed that my hair felt tangled and it looked as if I hadn’t washed my hair in a week; my hair actually looked greasy AFTER taking a shower! Not too happy.
After this experience I shyed away from using the combo for several weeks, but eventually the allure of the scent it left in my hair forced me in giving it another try, only this time I decided to only use the conditioner. After my shower, I timidly started to blow dry my hair, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that I was about to have a whole different experience. I was left with incredibly soft, managable hair that smelled amazing (do any of you remember Outreageous? This stuff smells exactly the same). Since then I have not made another go of the shampoo, until today, which was a big mistake. I thought maybe a bad hair day was to blame that day, but to my dismay, the shampoo simply sucks. I am here typing this very second with very clean, greasy hair.
I am a huge fan of the conditioner, however, and would buy it again. It smells great and leaves hair really soft and smooth. I have fine hair and it does not weigh it down at all. I could see this conditioner working on every hair type. The shampoo is another story. I would only recommend this to someone who has really coarse or thick hair, it just doesn’t mesh with fine locks. I guess that’s the way it goes…you can’t win them all!

All About the Eyes: SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex.

The first signs of aging seems to always appear around the eyes. Take out the sun factor, the squinting, rubbing etc.. I am talking about internal processes that are naturally occur as we age. Some internal factors include hormonal shifts and metabolic slowdown. This unfortunately results in puffiness, sagging, creping, and an overall thinness.
One cream that helps penetrate this delicate eye and target these internal factors is from SkinCeuticals called A.G.E. Eye Complex.

This very thick, almost balm-like cream is a unique treatment. It provides three dimensions of action and results.

On the surface, the optical diffusers in the cream immediately improve the look and gives off a slight radiance to the eye area. It diminishes the look of the fine lines, dark areas, and capillaries.
Just under the skin, specialized ingredients such as haloxyl and flavagrum improve the lymphatic drainage to start to eliminate puffiness and dark circles.
Within the skin, 4% blueberry extract pauses the internal reactions that occur within the collagen and elastin fibers along with 5% Proxylane to improve and strengthen the elasticity of the skin.

In studying the before and after pictures, (which I had trouble scanning - sorry) there was noticeable improvements after 4 weeks of using this cream and a pretty remarkable difference at the 12 week mark. My 66 year old mother is going to take this eye cream to the test and I will be posting her follow-up results.
SkinCeuticals products can be found through med spas, spas, physician's offices or online at SkinCeuticals.com.

The ladie’s of The Real Housewives of New Jersery have been open for the most part about the plastic surgery they’ve had in the past, and during the show. In one episode, all five women gathered for a Botox party, although Dina (2nd from right) and her sister Caroline (far right) refused to have the anti-aging injection.
Here’s the real story on who’s had what done…
Jacqueline Laurita- participated in Botox and lip injections during the Botox party episode. Jacqueline never confirmed she had breast implants, but comments made during Teresa’s breast augmentation consultation led me to believe she has implants.
Teresa Giudice- Received a breast (bubbie) augmentation during the filming last season, went from an A to a C cup.
Danielle Staub- Admitted she had a breast augmentation and has been suffering from capsular contraction and will be undergoing a redo. Danielle also participated in the Botox party, receiving Botox and lip injections. Although she’s denied any other surgery besides her breasts it’s believed she’s had an eye lift and possibly cheek implants and removal of a cleft chin.
Dina Manzo - Has breast implants, but she says she wants to have them removed – even though her husband likes her big bubbies. Denies having had lip injections, showing viewers her high school photo to prove she has naturally full lips.
Caroline Manzo- The only housewife who seems to not have had surgery, she claims her DD breasts are real and is against facial injections.

Smokey eyes can be a tricky makeup technique to master - unless, of course, you’ve got the right products and tools in your arsenal. If you’ve been looking to add some smolder to your look, you’ll definitely want to snag L’Oreal’s new HIP Kohl Eyeliner.

These loose kohl eyeliners are a relatively simple to use and produce a really lovely, soft smokey eye without the need for a smudger. They also come in six colors - from the simple black to some bold brights like teal and gold. An eyeliner to suit every mood! Now, THAT’s a concept I can get down with.
Just one caveat, be sure to apply before putting on your foundation as you may experience a bit of fall out. All in all, a small price to pay for a great smokey eye!
For more info, visit www.lorealparisusa.com or to purchase, visit your local drugstore.

So, upon leaving the beach–and seeing pictures, I have come to the conclusion I am ever so slightly fat.
Image: Sephora
A little known truth, though, is that a good tan can mask cellulite and make you look thinner. But it’s hard for me to go the tanning route naturally–I always just plain burn!
Tarte’s new CelluFIGHT Anti-Celluite Self-Tanner is fab - it’s a hydrating, gradual self-tanner that also has an anti cellulite ability.
i.e.: It does everything I need in one adorable tube!
Basically, it uses plant and bionutrient extracts to help to cellular metabolism, and shed excess fat tissue while the caffeine helps stimulate blood flow. Plus, obvs, it’s a self-tanner, which makes you look tan, yes…but thinner too!
Note to self: It would ALSO make you look thinner if you stop eating those crab cakes.

Beauty Basics: MAC Face Brushes
Beauty Basics is a series covering basic products and tools that help to make applying your makeup easier. To view the entire series to date, be sure to visit the beauty basics, or you can view posts within the series about MAC Face Brushes.
Focus On: MAC 165 Tapered Cheek & Highlighter Brush
MAC 165 Tapered Cheek & Highlighter Brush ($34.00) is a medium-sized, tapered face brush with natural bristles. This was a limited edition brush that was launched with Brunette, Blonde, and Redhead in early 2009. It will be making a reappearance in October 2009, for those who wish to purchase it, too. (As of time of this writing, it is still available via Nordstrom.com.) I adore using this brush to highlight cheek bones. It just works effortlessly and places the highlight perfectly. It is a soft, dense brush, so it picks up color easily, deposits well, and doesn’t eat up product. It works well to blend out color and powder products, too. This is one of my favorite brushes, so I would definitely urge you to pick it up if an opportunity presents itself!

As I made a quick trip through Nordstrom last night, I had to stop and do a double-take as I passed by the MAC counter. Ooh - my favorite Dazzleglasses were in a special little display. I had to investigate.
These new beauties, all seven of them were screaming my name, along with seven new lipsticks and four new lip pencils. Alas, this was the newest collection from MAC, just out yesterday. Take a look at Euristocrats2 to see why I am swooning.

Euristocrats2:

While “a kiss on the hand can be quite Continental,” a modern girl does the kissing now, knowing she has the drop-dead drama of these hot new Dazzleglass shades.

Before I give you the rundown, I will say that I picked up two of the Dazzleglass Lip Gloss and one of the new Lipsticks. The first Dazzleglass I picked was Euro Beat, which is a beautiful coral shade with gold pearl. I also selected Roman Holiday, which is a deeper coral, more on the brown side, but with a pink pearl finish to it. The Lipstick I just had to have is Naked Paris. It is a pin/coral shade with an almost color-changing pearl to it. It looks different in each type of light, but each look is gorgeous. It looks really bright in the tube, but is absolutely beautiful on the lips.
Euristocrats2 lineup:
DAZZLEGLASS - $18Date Night - Soft blue purple with pearlEuro Beat - Peach coral with gold pearlInternationalist - Yellow pink with blue pearlLocal Colour - Neutral yellow pink with gold pearlRoman Holiday - Medium brown coral with pink pearlRue d’Rouge - Light red with pink pearlVia Veneto - Light violet with blue pearl
LIP PENCIL - $13Magenta - Vivid pinkish-purpleCherry - Vivid bright bluish-redSubculture - Underground pinkWhirl - Dirty rose
Lipstick - $14Costa Chic - Frosty light coralNaked Paris - Sheer pink brown with multi-dimensional pearlPatisserie - Sheer creamy neutral pinkMilan Mode - Sheer deep pink with multi-dimensional pearlLondon Life - Sheer deep berry with multi-dimensional pearlSaint Germain - Clean pastel pinkCockney - Sheer yellow red with multi-dimensional pearl
It is on counter like I said, but it's also available in MAC stores as well as online at MACCosmetics.com

Beauty Basics: MAC Face Brushes
Beauty Basics is a series covering basic products and tools that help to make applying your makeup easier. To view the entire series to date, be sure to visit the beauty basics, or you can view posts within the series about MAC Face Brushes.
Focus On: MAC 150 Large Powder Brush
MAC 150 Large Powder Brush ($42.00) is a large, domed-shape densely-packed brush. It’s ideal for use with loose and pressed powders. I do believe MAC encourages using this with blush, too, but I find it far too large and dense for that purpose; particularly because there are so many better brushes to use (like the 116 and 129). This isn’t the softest brush I own by MAC, but it’s still incredibly soft and doesn’t feel scratch to me. Personally, I find I only use this for applying loose/pressed powders to set my makeup. I find it is fluffy enough to blend and give me thorough coverage, but it is dense enough that product doesn’t get wasted. I use this brush everyday, but I do wish it was more of a multi-tasker for its price!

Back in high school, Bath & Body Works and Victorias Secret body splashes were all the rage. Who could forget Country Apple and Pear Glac? Certainly, not I!
My favorite old-school scent had always been Victoria’s Secret Garden Body Splash in Freesia. I love the smell of light florals; its so romantic and really suits my personality, even after all these years.
Now, a new freesia makes its way onto the scene and has once again, stolen my heart.

In Home Laser Hair Removal With Tria Beauty: Part II, Operating the Device

Awhile back, I posted an introduction to the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System (read previous review). Today I am covering my actual use of the system. To see how to use the device, watch this video and/or read below for the main points that the video covers.

The Tria Beauty System is an in home laser hair removal device. While it is not cheap ($795), it is considerably cheaper than doing a full series of laser hair removal appointments at a salon and offers the same results.
Using the device basically gives a slight heating sensation. It is quite comfortable, even on the highest setting. I have used it twice now, and find that in a few spots my hair seems slightly thinner. However, with it being summer, I am shaving so much that it is rather hard to tell. I suspect seeing where things are this fall after several more treatments will be quite telling.
To use the device, remember the following:

Laser hair removal is not instantaneous. Be prepared for repeated treatment over the course of 6-8 months.
Because any laser hair removal the system works by targeting a contrast of dark hair on light skin, it will not be effective on blond or white hair, and it cannot be used on dark skin tones. If you have a medium to dark complexion, laser hair removal may be dangerous for you. The best candidates are those with light skin and darker hair. The product has various safety features to assure that only those with the proper skin tone can use it.
Laser hair removal is for the legs, underarm and general bikini areas. It is not safe to use in the areas of the face, breasts, or genitals.
Although very easy to use, it takes time to do each treatment. Small sections are zapped at a time in an overlapping pattern. So it takes awhile to do a leg. Plan accordingly!
Be sure to use on clean, dry, freshly shaved skin. Do not wax or epilate for 6 weeks before use.
For more, see the FAQ on the Tria Beauty website.

Stay tuned over the coming months as I report how well the device works for me.

Look - Make Up For Ever: Chatreuse Greens

Here’s a green-themed look using Make Up For Ever eyeshadows! :) I deliberatedly used MAC Soft Ochre paint pot as a base to show that bright colors can be brought down a notch by using a more neutralizing base, like Soft Ochre. Happy holiday weekend!
You will need the following…

Eyes: MAC Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral base), Make Up For Ever #171 Eyeshadow (shimmery chatreuse), Make Up For Ever #91 Eyeshadow (matte bright medium green), Make Up For Ever #53 Eyeshadow (shimmery forest green), Make Up For Ever #101 Eyeshadow (sheer, yellow-gold shimmer), Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes 12L (deep teal-green), Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash Mascara (black)
Cheeks: Make Up For Ever #5 Blush (matte coral-orange), Make Up For Ever #153 Blush (shimmery peachy-gold)
Lips: YSL Peach Passion Rouge Volupte Lipstick (peachy-coral), MAC Liberated lipglass (pale gold-yellow)
Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 116 (dense blush brush), 165 (highlighting brush)

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply MAC Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. On the inner lid, pack #171 eyeshadow on using the 239. On the outer lid and crease, apply #91 eyeshadow with the 226. Increase intensity by packing on more of #75 eyeshadow with the 239. Darken crease with #53 eyeshadow using the 219, and then blend out with the 226. Sweep #101 eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight with the 217. Smudge lower lash line with #171 eyeshadow with the 214 brush, pressing into lower lashes. Finish with 12L Aqua Eyes on on the lower lash line using the 208. Apply Aqua Smoky Lash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with #5 Blush using the 129, then highlight with #153 with the 165. Apply YSL Peach Passion Rouge Volupte lipstick to lips, and then top with MAC Liberated lipglass for color and shine.
