Blame it on the economy or my recent addiction to the Food Network, but I have become a cooking fool as of late. There's just something about making your own dishes and sauces that is fulfilling, inexpensive, and just plain delicious. I haven't eaten out in a month, and now when I have the chance to do so, I'm not interested. Same goes with sauces. I started barbecuing the other day, and ended up experimenting with barbecue sauce. Ketchup, honey, and some worcheshire sauce are usually enough for a basic glaze. But I just came across a juicy-sounding recipe that just may bring some fireworks to your mouth!Nearly Memphis Barbecue SauceMemphis barbecue sauce1 cup ketchup1/4 cup apple cider vinegar1/4 cup yellow mustard1/4 cup brown sugar2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce1 tablespoon chili powder2 teaspoons onion powder1 teaspoon garlic powder1 teaspoon celery salt1/4 teaspoon cayenne1/4 teaspoon black pepperCombine all ingredients in medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat and simmer until somewhat thickened, about 6-8 minutes. Makes 6 servings.Nutritional analysis per serving: 94 calories, 1 g protein, 23 g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 1 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 800 mg sodiumRecipe From Newsday

Scalp & Breakage Miracle Line by Smooth 'N Shine: For natural ladies too!I have been wearing my hair naturally for a few years now, and have developed a system of carefully caring for my thick mane along with my stylist. I love her because she is a one-on-one personal stylist who really understands my natural hair, and has gotten it to its strongest and healthiest in years. She's also a master of the hot press, and leaves my hair feeling soft, silky, and lustrous whenever I decide to go that route-because perms are simply not an option for me anymore. With so much care invested in my hair, its not hard to understand why I cannot put just anything on my mane. I need the products to do their job, protect my hair from excessive heat, and not weigh my hair down. So I decided to give the Smooth 'N Shine system a try.I start by washing and blow drying my hair. I am 100% natural. I then apply the Leave-In Treatment Conditioner and blow dry straight. My hair was pretty soft and fluffy, and there was hardly any breakage.Getting my curl-on: I apply the Aid-Intense Nourishing Balm which protected my hair from the dreaded curling iron burn. After curling, I spritz on some Root to Tip Conditioning Oil Sheen Spray for the finale. And I'm good to go! Silky and shiny--no perm or press needed!Buy Smooth 'N Shine products at Folica.com

Thus, I'd love you all to join me in celebrating the best that he offered to us over many of our lifetimes:No tears, just joy at the wonderful gift of music that he shared with the world through the best of his tunes.

At least that's what I thought I read at first glance in the New York Magazine article. All of these pop artists have been littering the fashion design arena with their classless crap for years. I guess the recession is clawing into the oncelucrative scam these non-designers have been running on the public. I am waiting for the House of Dead Wrong to follow suit. From New York Mag:Jennifer Lopez Will Temporarily Spare the U.S. Her Clothing LineJennifer Lopez has decided to halt production of her Sweetface clothing line. Though Lopez was a pioneer in the celebrity clothing business, her hardly storied design career has been turbulent and, well, kind of sad. Try to suppress your shock. In 2001, she launched JLO as one of the first celebrity fashion lines. Remember her shows at New York Fashion Week? Despite the initial hype, the industry didn't take her as a serious designer, and the line never attained the success of, say, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. label. (Hell, we practically forgot she had a line until today's news.) In 2007, Lopez finally decided to close JLO in the U.S. and distribute it only in other countries. But she thought America wanted more apparel by her, so she launched justsweet, which closed after only a few seasons at retail.Full article here.

Money Bluffing

This is ghetto? Michelle is wearing Rachel Roy. And they say she never wears Black designers. pfft.I hate Oak Bluffs. A few years ago my mother tried to get me to go to the "Black Part" of Martha's Vineyard and I declined because I had no interest in spending my summer with a bunch of trash-talking, uppity, social scavenging Black folk. I know it's a harsh evaluation. But when my mom and sister came back, their reviews were all but glowing. So to imagine that these same folk have the audacity to call Michelle Obama "ghetto" is not too far fetched-- but altogether sad considering many Black people of sizable financial means come from humble backgrounds. These people had a lot to say pending the Obamas' upcoming trip to the vacation spot. In New York Magazine some interesting notes:...At the same time, theres also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. Obama is more a man of the people, says a Vineyarder whos part of black high society. He doesnt seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesnt; she is basically a ghetto girl. Thats what she saysIm just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasnt reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what theyll do about that.and this gem:...And while the Only Ones embrace each other, they can be dismissive of other blacks. If youre too Southern Baptist, too dark-skinned, too street, you might not be insulted by a white person but you may be insulted by a black person, says Columbia law professor Patricia Williams. It resembles the way in Britain race and class are inflected. If youre a Nigerian prince and you speak the queens English, youre okay, but if youre an island hoodlum, then there are no bounds to the expression of racism. The sad thing is, I know a few families that can't wait to be a part of that scene. And they don't even have the money for it--they're just calling our bluff.Read the article here.

Devil Dancing

After just completing Mark Curry's Puffy tell-all Dancing With the Devil, I tried in vain to find some online reviews. Call it bad luck, or a faulty internet connection, but every page where there was a write-up turned up blank or missing. Hmmm... I had been wanting to read this book for months because it purported to describe the falsehoods that Puffy portrays to the music business. While it is now no secret that a deal with Bad Boy Records is pure career suicide, I was still intriguided to find out what Curry had to say. And after reading this book, all I could think about was that scene in the Biggie biopic Notorious where he receives that check from Puffy for $25,000. Sadly, that check was likely the largest sum Biggie ever saw at one time while he was alive. Among the stories in the book: How Puffy un-heroically left Biggie hours after the rapper was shot, and how he lied about being the first to contact Voletta Wallace:"Puff was freakin' out," L'il Cease said in a recent documentary. Cease said that while he and members of Junior Mafia were trying to figure out how to get Biggie back home, Puff went back to his hotel, grabbed his stuff, and was on a plane for New York in less than three hours. How Puffy's actions lead to the firing of industry legend Clive Davis from BMG Records. After a physical altercation with producer Steve Stoute over the blasphemous "Hate Me Now" video, executives from BMG began to think of Puffy, and subsequently, Davis, as a liability.Days after the Club New York incident, BMG decided that Puff had become too much of a liability. Since Clive Davis had already been admonished after the Stoute incident, BMG wasted no time putting plans in motion to fire him. BMG officials quietly offered Davis' job to LA Reid, and purchased LaFace Records for $100 million in exchange for Reid accepting the job.And Curry's disillussionment when, after writing and producing several hits for Puffy, being told that his own album would never come to fruition: I started calling a friend in the accounting department at Bad Boy and asking her if my budget had been approved yet. I was calling her office so much that I knew I was getting on her nerves, so one day I simply dropped by to see her."Mark, I hate to tell you this, but there is no budget for your album." And the list goes on: The shady contract that gave up virtually all publishing rights and royalties from The Lox, even as they moved to another label. Puff's suspicious alliances with known gang bangers, his ever-growing empire and endless supply of cash flow while his artists go broke and resort to a life of crime... The stories are endless. Hopefully enough young artists with be read this cautionary tale and become a little more business-savvy and a lot less star struck. To order visit: http://www.markcurrybook.com
